Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, NC (AUGUST 24, 2012) - Winston-Salem earned a crucial victory over division rival Myrtle Beach 8-2 in front of 6,011 fans Friday night at BB&T Ballpark.
The Dash (38-22, 82-47-1) pushed their lead over the Pelicans in the Southern Division's second-half standings to three games with nine to play in the regular season. Winston also improved to 10-8 against Myrtle Beach (35-25, 71-59) with two more games remaining this season.
A pair of three-run frames allowed Winston-Salem to pull away from the Pelicans. The Dash plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a four-run lead. David Herbek doubled home the inning's first run before scoring on Keenyn Walker's triple. Two batters later, Marcus Semien capped the inning with an RBI single.
In the sixth, Daniel Wagner, who set a Dash high with five stolen bases in the victory, began the scoring with an RBI single, and Semien followed with a sacrifice fly. Dan Black finished off Winston-Salem's scoring with an RBI double for his 83rd RBI, which is good for second in the Carolina League in that category.
The Dash struck first in the bottom of the second when Cyle Hankerd singled home a run with a blooper to center. After Myrtle Beach knotted the score in the top of the third, Winston tacked on another tally in the home half of the third when Michael Earley came up with a run-producing single of his own.
Winston-Salem starter Justin Collop (9-3) held the Pelicans to two runs in six innings to become the first Dash hurler to reach nine wins this season. Collop is also tied with All-Star Matt Heidenreich, now with the Houston organization, for the team lead with seven quality starts.
Out of the bullpen, Terance Marin tossed two perfect innings before Max Peterson held the Pelicans scoreless in the ninth during his first outing with Winston-Salem.
The Dash and Pelicans continue their three-game series Saturday night at 7:00. Winston-Salem sends Steve McCray (7-3, 3.70 ERA) to the mound against fellow right-hander Joe Van Meter (3-5, 1.85 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 on wsdash.com.
