Looking to relive the magic of a night ago, the Keys put together a ninth inning rally but it fell short. Down 6-2, Frederick mustered two runs in the ninth inning and got the tying runner on base but fell short 6-4 in the series opener at Potomac. With the defeat coinciding with a Wilmington win the Keys are now a half game out of first place with nine games to play.
The Keys got the first three batters on in the ninth inning when DH Jeremy Nowak doubled. The following two hitters would walk to load the bases. In came Potomac closer Rob Wort. 1B Mike Flacco hit a ground ball infield single up the middle to bring home a run and push the tying run aboard.
The rally would fizzle however as 3B Mike Mosby grounded into a double play that scored another run. SS Garabez Rosa struck out to end the game.
Frederick started Orioles first round pick in 2012 Kevin Gausman who worked three innings allowing five hits and two runs while fanning three batters. Gausman allowed a solo home run in the second inning. He gave up a bunt single and an RBI-double in the third inning. All-in-all Gausman threw 50 pitches with 32 for strikes.
Zach Fowler came on for three innings of work allowing three runs on seven hits. RHP Oscar Melendez worked the last two innings. From the second through seventh innings, Potomac scored a single run in each frame.
Now Frederick looks to reclaim first place in the home stretch. Saturday, August 25th, RHP Devin Jones looks for a seventh consecutive win as the Keys and Nats have a 6:35 p.m. start. Coverage begins 20-minutes prior on 1450-AM The Source.
