FREDERICK, Md. - Luis Robert smacked a go-ahead home run in the top of the ninth against Frederick on Sunday afternoon, but the Dash fell 11-10 in walk-off fashion against the Keys at Nymeo Field.
Trailing 9-7 in the last frame, Robert stroked a two-out, three-run homer to left against Diogenes Almengo (1-0) to put Winston-Salem (3-1) ahead 10-9. Robert, who is rated the 39th-best prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, is 9-for-17 with three homers and 10 RBIs to start the 2019 campaign.
However, Frederick (1-3) rallied back against Kevin Escorcia (0-1) in the latter part of the ninth. Kirvin Moesquit singled with one out, and, following a walk to Yeltsin Gudino, Stuart Levy blooped an RBI single down the right-field line to knot the contest at 10. Then, Mason McCoy lined a walk-off single to left to propel the Keys to their first win of the year.
Even in defeat, the Dash received a great outing from right-hander Blake Battenfield, who recorded the first quality start of the season for Winston-Salem. The former Oklahoma State star allowed just one run and six hits in six innings of work in his third career appearance against the Keys.
For the third consecutive game, Winston-Salem took the early lead. Robert singled to start the contest against Matthias Dietz, and Jameson Fisher followed with a double to left-center. Two batters later, Tyler Frost drilled a run-scoring double to left, putting the Dash ahead 1-0. Then, Zach Remillard grounded an RBI fielder's choice to make it a 2-0 contest.
In the fourth, the Dash chased Dietz from the game. After back-to-back walks to Craig Dedelow and Yeyson Yrizarri, Tate Blackman lined an RBI double to right to bring home Dedelow. Luis Perez relieved Dietz after a walk to Carlos Perez loaded the bases, and he proceeded to allow all of his inherited runners to score. Fisher gave the Dash a 4-0 lead with an RBI single, and Nick Madrigal grounded a two-run single down the right-field line to make it a 6-0 game.
But, the Keys overcame the six-run deficit. Frederick plated one in the fifth on an RBI single from Mason McCoy and exploded for eight runs in the eighth inning against the Dash bullpen. After the Keys cut the deficit to three against Jose Nin, Gudino smacked a grand slam against Will Kincanon to put Frederick ahead 7-6.
The Keys added on two more runs in the frame to set up the eventful ninth inning.
The Dash now hit the road to Wilmington, Del., to face the Blue Rocks in a three-game set at Frawley Stadium. Left-hander Kyle Kubat (first start of 2019) will take the hill on Monday against left-hander Daniel Tillo (first start of 2019). First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m., and fans can catch all of the action on wsdash.com/broadcast and the TuneIn Radio App. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:20 p.m.
The Dash kick off their 10th anniversary season at BB&T Ballpark on Thursday, April 11, against the Potomac Nationals. Thursday's home opener will be a Thirsty Thursday, presented by Lowes Foods, and a Pups in the Park outing, presented by Handy and Handy Orthodontics. Following Friday's game, there will be a postgame fireworks display, presented by PTI.
