TODAY: The Mudcats play the finale of a four game series today versus the Down East Wood Ducks at Grainger Stadium in Kinston, NC... The Mudcats won last night and lead the series 2-1... Tonight's game is also the fourth of a season opening seven game road trip for the Mudcats. The trip features four games at Down East and three games at Potomac (4/8-4/10).
ICYMI: A two run Carolina first proved to be enough last night as the combined efforts of starter Noah Zavolas and relievers Michael Petersen, Matt Hardy and Rodrigo Benoit limited the Wood Ducks to just one run as the Mudcats defeated Down East 2-1 at Grainger Stadium. The Mudcats (2-1) managed just two hits in last night's road win, but ended up limiting the Wood Ducks (1-2) to just the one run on eight hits while earning their second straight victory. Carolina scored both of its runs in the first and led from start to finish while earning the win and taking a two games to one lead in the four game series.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The Mudcats managed just two hits in last night's 2-1 victory versus the Wood Ducks in Kinston. The one-run edging of Down East came in the third game of the season and the third game of Carolina's four game set in Kinston. It also gave the Mudcats a 2-1 lead in the series. Coincidentally, the 2018 Mudcats also won their third game of the season after totaling just two hits in a game. Carolina defeated the Dash 5-2 on 4/8/18 last season in game one of a doubleheader versus Winston-Salem at Five County Stadium... The Mudcats managed just two hits last night, with the first coming in the third from Eddie Silva. Their second was an eighth inning double from Joantgel Segovia off reliever Josh Advocate. Carolina scored both of its runs last night without registering a run-scoring hit.
TONIGHT'S STARTER: Right-hander Dylan File gets the start for the Mudcats in today's series finale versus the Wood Ducks at Grainger Stadium. File was a mid-season All-Star last season with Low-A Wisconsin in the Midwest League and went 8-10 with overall a 3.96 ERA over 25 starts with the Timber Rattlers in 2018. He also totaled 114 strikeouts against 28 walks while pitching through 136.1 innings in Low-A last season. File finished 10th in Midwest League last season in ERA (3.96), 5th in innings (136.1) and 2nd in K/BB (4.07).
FIRST: Relievers Matt Smith and Chris Dula both appeared in an affiliated MiLB game for the first time since the 2016 season after pitching for the Mudcats on April 4 and April 5 respectively... Smith missed the last two seasons due to injury and had last pitched for a Brewers affiliate in 2016 after pitching for the AZL Brewers, Helena and Wisconsin in his first professional season. Smith most recently pitched, however, with the Road Warriors of the Atlantic League in 2018... Dula pitched for the Utica Unicorns of the United Shore Professional Baseball League in 2017 and 2018. He also pitched with the York Revolution of the Atlantic League and the Frontier League's Gateway Grizzlies in 2017. He had last pitched for an affiliated team in 2016 when he split time between High Desert, Spokane and Hickory in the Rangers' system.
HOW THEY'RE BUILT: The Mudcats open the 2019 season with 11 returning players from last season... The 2019 squad features three of the Brewers' Top 30 prospects (as rated by MLBPipeline.com) including OF Tristen Lutz (No. 5), C Payton Henry (No. 10) and C Mario Feliciano (No. 22).
MUDDIES v. WOODIES: The Mudcats went 12-11 versus the Wood Ducks last season; 11-3 at home and 1-8 away... The Mudcats closed out last year's season series vs. Down East with a four game home sweep between 8/27 and 8/30. They additionally avoided a season long sweep in Kinston with a 2-1 victory on 8/16/18 (both Carolina runs were scored in the 8th on a 2-run 2B from Weston Wilson).
BIG LEAGUE CAMP: Devin Hairston played in 13 MLB Spring Training games for the Brewers in 2019 (2-for-8, 3 R, 2B, 3 RBI, 2 BB, 6 SO). Hairston also traveled with Milwaukee to Montreal for an exhibition game versus Toronto on 3/25 and scored a run... Tristen Lutz played in 17 MLB Spring Training games (1-for-18, 4 R, 3 BB, 10 SO)... Rodrigo Benoit appeared in five MLB Spring Training games (5 G, 3.2 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 1 HR, 4 SO)... Matt Hardy appeared in one MLB Spring Training game and earned a victory on 3/24 vs. ARI (1-0, 0.2 IP, 1 BB)... PLAYOFF DROUGHT: The Mudcats failed to reach the playoffs again in 2018, stretching their current playoff drought to seven consecutive Carolina League seasons. Carolina has additionally failed to reach the playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons overall between their time in the Carolina League (2012-Present) and Southern League (1991-2011). The Mudcats last reached the playoffs in 2008 when they lost to the Mississippi Braves in the Southern League Championship Series... Current post-season droughts in MiLB (full-season teams): Buffalo (AAA)/Delmarva: 13 seasons, New Orleans (AAA): 11 seasons, Iowa (AAA): 10 seasons, Hartford (AA): 9 seasons, Louisville (AAA): 8 seasons.
ALUMNI REPORT: Corbin Burnes (0-1, 9.90) started for the Brewers last night against the Cubs in Milwaukee and ended up suffering his first loss of the season after allowing seven runs on six hits over 5.0 innings pitched. Burnes struck out six, but walked three and allowed three home runs to the Cubs in the loss. Burnes began the 2017 season with the Mudcats, before earning a promotion to Double-A Biloxi in May of 2017.
