Dash Erase Seven-Run Deficit, Rally Past Red Sox

Winston-Salem, NC - Dash catcher Logan Johnson crushed a solo home run off Ryne Miller in the bottom of the eighth inning to complete a dramatic comeback as Winston-Salem (20-21) defeated Salem 8-7 on Friday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. The Dash trailed 7-0 after three innings before scoring eight unanswered to steal the win and move within a half game of first place Salem in the Southern Division of the Carolina League.

Salem wasted little time putting their bats to work with four runs in the first inning off Dash starting pitcher Johnnie Lowe. Chih-Hsien Chiang and Jason Place cracked back-to-back RBI doubles and Mike Jones added a two-run home run to give the Red Sox a 4-0 lead. Salem tacked on a run in the second inning when Lowe unleashed a wild pitch with runners on the corners.

The Red Sox knocked Lowe out of the game in the top of the third inning with consecutive singles from Mike Jones and Che-Hsuan Lin. Two outs later, Kris Negron lined a two-run double to extend the Salem's advantage to 7-0.

The Dash offense came to life with a run in the fourth inning when right fielder Christian Marrero doubled with one out and moved to third on an error. A ground out by left fielder Joe Persichina brought Marrero across the plate with Winston-Salem's first run.

Winston-Salem's evened the score with a six-run sixth inning. Lee Cruz led off the frame with a solo home run off Salem starting pitcher Eammon Portice. After Logan Johnson followed with a single and Kent Gerst walked, Portice was pulled in favor of Red Sox reliever Kyle Fernandes. Second baseman Dale Mollenhauer greeted the new hurler with a single that loaded the bases. Shortstop Greg Paiml walked to bring in a run and third baseman Brent Morel added a two-run double. Marrero, who finished with a season-high four hits, followed with a run-scoring double to knot the score at seven.

Dash reliever Santo Luis worked two scoreless innings to collect the win. Miller (5-2) surrendered the game-winning home run and took the loss for the Red Sox. Lowe (2-2) only lasted 2.2 innings and allowed seven runs (six earned) on eight hits but did not factor in the decision.

The Dash and Red Sox square off in game two of this three-game series on Saturday night at Wake Forest Baseball Park. Winston-Salem will send RHP Daniel Hudson (1-1, 2.40) to the mound, while Salem is expected to turn to RHP Kyle Weiland (1-4, 7.88). The first pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
