Frederick Keys News Release

The Keys did something today you almost never see them do: they played a road game in Frederick. The Keys completed a game with the Kinston Indians that had been suspended due to rain on May 17th while in Kinston, NC. Frederick beat the K-Tribe 9-4, then defeated them again in a seven-inning ball game, 5-4.

The Keys and Indians picked up the suspended game in the bottom of the first. Frederick had a 2-0 lead, but Kinston had runners on the corners with nobody out. RHP Tim Bascom had originally been the starting pitcher, when they began the game last Sunday. LHP Zach Britton pitched today for Frederick, in what was technically his first relief appearance of the year. Kinston 3B Lonnie Chisenhall resumed the game with an RBI-single to make it a 2-1 game.

The Keys began to pull away in the second. With one on and two out, 3B Tyler Henson drilled a two-run homer, making it a 4-1 Frederick lead.

Frederick scored twice more in the top of the third. With RF Kraig Binick on first and nobody out, C Wally Crancer doubled to right. Bincik scored. SS Pedro Florimon knocked in Crancer with an RBI-single, making it 6-1.

Kinston mounted a small comeback in the third. Chisenhall it a two-run homer. Two batters later, LF Lucas Montero hit a solo blast, making it 6-4.

Frederick would tacked on three more runs as the game went on, including one on a solo homer from DH Billy Rowell.

Britton got the win in game one, improving his record to 2-1. RHP Joey Maholic took the loss, dropping to 0-1. RHP Andy Barb shut out Kinston over the final four frames to pick up his first save of the year.

Kinston and Frederick then played a second game. This time the Keys were the home team in a seven-inning contest. Frederick took the early lead in the bottom of the first. With one out, Florimon doubled. A batter later, 1B Brandon Waring singled to put runners on the corners with two down. Rowell came through with a two-run double, giving the Keys an early 2-0 lead.

They weren't done. C Caleb Joseph hit a hot shot at Chisenhall at third. He couldn't field it cleanly. It turned into a two-base error, and allowed Rowell to score from second. The next batter, DH Robbie Widlansky, hit a bloop RBI-single to left in his first Carolina League at bat. The base knock gave Frederick a 4-0 lead.

The Keys would tack on another run in the fifth. It was all the offense they would need. LHP Chris Salberg surrendered two runs in the third. Then in the fourth, Salberg surrendered two more runs, making it a one-run game. The southpaw then loaded the bases with two outs, when he was removed for LHP Jake Stevens. The left-hander struck out RF Matt Brown swinging to end the game.

Stevens was lights out the rest of the way. He pitched 3.1 hitless innings. He allowed just one walk while striking out five, on the way to his second win of the season. RHP Jonathan Holt took the loss. His record drops to 1-2.

The Keys and Indians will play once again tomorrow at Harry Grove Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00. It's Fitness Night at the ballpark. The gates will open at 4:00 for a special fitness expo. Former NBA big man Gheorghe Muresan will be at the park putting on a special program for kids on the field. Fireworks will follow the game.
