Potomac Nationals News Release
TODAY: The Potomac Nationals and Lynchburg Hillcats will play for Northern Division supremacy in a three-game Memorial Day weekend series from Pfitzner Stadium beginning tonight at 7:05 p.m. The P-Nats are coming off a 4-2 road trip through Myrtle Beach and Kinston and currently stand just a half game behind the Hillcats for first place in the Northern Division. Lynchburg, the Carolina League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, have occupied the top spot in the division for all but one day during the first two months of the season and took three out of four from Potomac in their season-opening series from April 9-12.
In that series, the Pirates saw an immediate return on their over $6 million investment in #1 hitting prospect Pedro Alvarez who hit his first professional home run and drove in a team-high six runs for the Hillcats. Lynchburg scattered 16 extra-base hits against P-Nats pitching with .277 batting average against their Northern Division counterparts. Potomac bats were for the most part held in check during those four days in Lynchburg as Hillcats' staff posted a 2.75 ERA and Trent Jewett's club was outscored 25-15. Last season, The Natties split the season series 10-10 but Lynchburg won the final five meetings between the clubs.
