WINSTON-SALEM, NC (JULY 23, 2012) - Winston-Salem overwhelmed the visiting Carolina Mudcats by a score of 12-3 in the first of four inside BB&T Ballpark Monday night.
For the 14th time this season, the Dash (16-15, 60-40-1) boasted a double-digit run output, which is a Carolina League-leading figure. Also, Winston starter Steve McCray (5-2) worked into the eighth inning for the first time in his minor league career. The righty held the Mudcats to three runs, two of which were earned, on five base hits.
All of this propelled the Dash to their league-best 60th regular season victory. Winston leads Myrtle Beach by five-and-a-half games for the circuit's best overall mark.
After Carolina (17-14, 49-52) struck for single tallies in the third and fourth innings, Winston-Salem jumped in front for good thanks to a three-run fourth. Trayce Thompson yanked an RBI double down the left field line for the Dash's first run of the game. Two batters later, Cyle Hankerd played tag with the center field wall for an RBI triple. He scored soon after on a Michael Earley run-producing double to right-center field.
The Dash scored nine times in the game's final three innings. Earley's RBI fielder's choice was Winston's lone tally in the sixth. One inning later, the Dash scored a run on a Carolina error before Marcus Semien brought home two more with a single.
Winston-Salem pulled away with a five-run eighth inning. The Dash sent 10 men to the plate, and Keenyn Walker and Earley each recorded two-run singles. Dan Black also chipped in with a sacrifice fly to right-center field.
Earley finished 2-for-5 with four RBI to push his season total to 56, which is fifth-best in the Carolina League. Walker went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases. Walker has stolen a base in four straight games and is fifth in the minors in swipes with 45 between Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem.
With the victory, the Dash clinched their first season series against the newest member of the CL. Winston is 11-6 against the Mudcats with three games remaining. The Dash are 5-2 against Carolina at BB&T Ballpark.
Winston-Salem and Carolina continue this four-game series Tuesday night at 7:00. The Dash will send southpaw Scott Snodgress to the mound for his first career High-A start against right-hander Joseph Colon (0-1, 3.60 ERA). Pre-game coverage begins at 6:45 on wsdash.com.
