Hill City Howlers News Release
Lynchburg, VA- It was all about Gus Schlosser in the Hillcats' 5-0 win versus the Potomac Nationals. Schlosser dominated the game with his first career complete game shutout. New Hillcat, Michael Spina, added two hits and two RBI in the win as well.
The young gun, Robbie Ray, was set to take on the Hillcats' Gus Schlosser. It was a battle that the Hillcats won just last week and it would be a battle that proved Schlosser to be dominate, yet again.
The P-Nats got a hit in the top of the first, a double by Adrian Sanchez, before Schlosser locked in and retired the next 11 batters he faced.
Ray was strong through the first frame, but the bottom of the second wasn't so successful. Braeden Schluber got the inning going with a single with one out. Then, new Hillcat, Michael Spina, impressed the home crowd with a double to score Schlehuber and give the 'Cats a 1-0 lead.
The bottom of the third proved be even more of a challenge for Ray. Nick Ahmed was at second with two outs when Adam Milligan hit a ball on a line into the left-center field gap.Ahmed scored to make it 2-0, but the offense wasn't done. Edward Salcedo followed with an RBI hit of his own to extend the lead to 3-0. Schlehuber got plunked to put runners at first and second when Spina came through with another RBI hit. The 4-0 lead would stick through the sixth.
Schlosser would cruise through those 11 batters until the Steven Souza got aboard with a bunt single to start the top of the fifth, but in true Schlosser fashion, he induced a double play ball to end the inning.
With Adam Carr in to pitch in the top of the seventh, Mycal Jones worked a walk. He moved to second on a base hit by Ahmed before scoring on a Milligan single to end the scoring at 5-0.
For good measure Schlosser would finish off the P-Nats throwing just 94 pitches in his first career complete game shutout. Schlosser's win was 11th and puts him in sole possession of the league lead in that category. In nine innings, Schlosser allowed five hits, struck out six and didn't surrender a walk. Ray (3-7) picked up the loss for his five innings of work. He allowed four runs on seven hits to go along with one walk and four whiffs.
Game two is slated for a 7:05pm start time. Gates will open at 6:00pm at Lynchburg City Stadium. On the rubber will be Cody Martin (10-6, 2.76) as he looks to be the second CL pitcher with 11 wins. Matt Grace (5-9, 5.82) will look to shutdown the 'Cats offense for the Nats.. The Hillcats On-Deck Show powered by Honda/Suzuki of Lynchburg goes on the air at 6:40pm. Listen live to all the action on 105.5 FM KD Country and online at lynchburg-hillcats.com with Erik Wilson and Mike Viso.
