Frederick Keys News Release

Frederick, Md. -The Frederick Keys (44-42/8-8) saw an early 6-0 lead disappear, while the Winston-Salem Dash (36-50/8-8) hit four home runs and racked up 16 hits in a 13-11 win on Saturday night at Nymeo Field. Playing in front of 8,714, the third-largest crowd of the season, the Keys brought the tying run to bat in the ninth but could not come through. It marks Frederick's biggest blown advantage of the season.

With his team in a four-run hole, Wynston Sawyer singled with one out in the ninth against Robinson Leyer. The Keys three-hole man moved to scoring positon on defensive indifference, but Aderlin Rodriguez was retired on a flyout to center. That sent up Conor Bierfeldt who worked the count full, before tomahawking a two-run blast to left to make it a two-run affair. It was the Connecticut native's 14th homer of the year.

Jomar Reyes followed with a single, prompting Dash manager Joel Skinner to go to the bullpen. Calling on Colin Kleven, the right-hander struck Cam Kneeland to end the ballgame.

The Keys jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first three innings. Sawyer hit a frozen rope homer in the first off Kelvis Valerio, while the orange and black added four more in the second. With the bases loaded Jay Gonzalez tripled to right-center, while he scored on an Erick Salcedo sacrifice fly.

In the third, Rodriguez doubled and scored on a Kneeland single, but the visitors came roaring back in the fourth. After seeing one over the minimum in the first three innings, Keys starter Cory Jones could not escape. With one out, Winston-Salem scored four times on five combined pitches to four batters. A Mason Robbins double was the opening salvo, while he scored on a Nick Basto base hit. The latter came home on a single and a misplay by Jay Gonzalez in left, before Telvin Nash crushed a two-run homer to left.

Within a pair, the Dash leveled the game thanks to a Brett Austin two-run shot. The seventh of eight hits in the inning for the visitors, it was the most knocks Keys pitching had given up in a stanza this year.

Frederick briefly retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth, after a two-out error by Gerson Montilla put men at first and second for the Keys. Bierfeldt answered the call with a two-run double, however Winston-Salem scored four more times in the fifth. Half came on a two-run homer by Davis, while a two-bagger by Cleuluis Rondon scored Toby Thomas from first and a single by Jones brought Rondon in.

Robbins hit a solo shot in the sixth to conclude the Dash's home run parade. The four dingers was one short of Winston's season-high. Meanwhile Frederick's three homers tied their season high for deep flies, and gave them three in back-to-back nights.

A passed ball plated two critical insurance runs for the Dash in the eighth. With men at second and third, a Tanner Scott pitch eluded Wynston Sawyer, while a throwing error by Frederick's catcher allowed a second man to score.

Valerio (3-3) got the win despite an ugly stat line. Working five innings, he allowed eight runs (six earned) on 10 hits, walked one and struck out one. Trevor Belicek (1-3) suffered the loss, surrendering three runs on three hits in 0.1 of an inning. Kleven got his second save by recording the game's last out.

The Keys and Dash continue their series on Sunday night. Left-hander Mitch Horacek (4-9, 4.89) starts for the orange and black and will be opposed by righty Jordan Stephens (4-7, 3.42). First pitch is slated for 6:00 p.m and the broadcast can be heard on 1450 AM The Source and frederickkeys.com. For tickets, fans can call the Keys at 301-815-9939 or visit frederickkeys.com.
