Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WILMINGTON, Del. - Powered by three homers and a quality start by Bryan Blough, the Dash held off the Wilmington Blue Rocks 6-5 on Friday night at Frawley Stadium.
At the time of this story's release, Myrtle Beach's game against Carolina has yet to be completed. Thus, the Dash (37-31) have pulled within a game and a half of the Pelicans, who still own a magic number of two in the race for a Southern Division title in the first half.
The Dash scored at least a run in five different innings Friday. Chris Curley began the club's offense with a two-out solo homer to right field in the first. One inning later, Brent Tanner continued his tremendous series with a run-producing single up the middle to give the Dash a 2-0 edge. Tanner is 5-for-9 since his promotion from Low-A Kannapolis earlier this week.
Winston-Salem doubled its lead in the fourth inning. Courtney Hawkins led off the frame with a solo bomb to left. He snapped a 1-for-21 funk with the long ball, which propelled him into sole possession of second place in the CL with 13 on the season. Three batters later, Josh Richmond doubled home the Dash's fourth run of the night.
Adam Heisler connected on his first career High-A homer on the first pitch of the fifth frame to give the Dash a 5-0 cushion. With that blast, Winston-Salem became the first Carolina League club to reach 60 homers on the season.
After Wilmington (32-36) dented the scoreboard on a Daniel Mateo two-run single in the bottom of the fifth, Winston-Salem pushed its lead back to four in the seventh when Tanner doubled with one out and Heisler brought him home with a single.
Because of a late charge by the Blue Crew, Heisler's seventh-inning knock proved to be the difference. Max Peterson walked the bases loaded in the ninth, and Jared Schlehuber cleared them with a double. However, Peterson whiffed Dennis Raben with the tying run at second to preserve the Dash's 10th one-run victory of the campaign.
As a result, Blough (5-4) was rewarded with his third victory in as many outings against the men from the First State. Blough, who now boasts a career-high four-game winning streak, allowed two runs on six hits. Against the Rocks, Blough has given up just three runs in 20 innings of work. Jeremy Erben followed with two scoreless innings before Peterson entered in the ninth.
These two squads continue their four-game series to end the first half Saturday night at 6:05 from Frawley Stadium. The Dash send right-hander Myles Jaye (3-1, 6.42 ERA) to the hill against southpaw Sam Selman (4-5, 5.36 ERA). Pregame coverage begins at 5:50 on wsdash.com.
