Wichita Thunder News Release
Wichita, KS (February 14th) - Major league baseball players and former Shockers Andy Dirks and Mike Pelfrey recently joined the Thunder to drop the ceremonial face-off. This coming weekend, the Thunder will honor two more that have contributed so much to our community. Dan Dillon, the longtime voice of KFDI radio, will be in attendance on Saturday night to drop the puck. On Sunday, the Wichita State University Women's Volleyball team will do the same.
Dan Dillon has been a calming voice on the Wichita airwaves for 34 years and last week, he announced his retirement. Dillon signed off as news director and severe weather spotter for the last time this past Friday morning. The City of Wichita honored him by proclaiming his last day on the air as Dan Dillon Day. He started his new job as the media coordinator for the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office this past Monday. The Thunder are honored to have him be a part of the weekend's festivities.
"Dan Dillon is an iconic figure in Wichita broadcasting. The impact he has made on radio news for nearly a generation can't be measured," commented Journal Broadcast Group Wichita Operations Manager Justin Case. "We're proud of his accomplishments at KFDI and wish him success in his new role working with the Sedgwick County District Attorney's Office."
Also in attendance this weekend will be the Wichita State Women's Volleyball team. Head Coach Chris Lamb led this year's group to a 24-10 record and advanced to their first Sweet Sixteen in school history. The Shockers won 20 or more matches for the 10th-straight season and advanced to their sixth-straight NCAA tournament and seventh overall. In the final rankings, Coach Lamb's team was ranked 23rd overall in the AVCA Poll and annually rank among the top 10 in attendance.
Wichita visits Denver tomorrow night in what will be Head Coach Kevin McClelland's 500th game coaching. He began his coaching career in 2005-06 and has spent his entire career in the CHL. McClelland is eight wins shy of reaching 300 for his career. With one more win, he will pass Gary Unger in seventh place all-time with 293 career victories. Wichita makes its third appearance at the Denver Coliseum as the team split its two previous contests against the Cutthroats, winning 5-3 on November 30th and losing 2-0 on December 1st. In the last two meetings against Denver, Wichita outscored the Cutthroats 14-1 in back-to-back games at the end of January. Five players for the Thunder have six points against Denver, including back-to-back hat tricks from Matt Robinson and Greger Hanson. Brad Smyth leads the way for the Cutthroats with five points against Wichita.
Wichita returns home for three-straight after tomorrow night, beginning on Saturday, February 16th against Denver. For tickets, call 755-SEAT, visit the INTRUST Bank Arena box office or online at www.selectaseat.com.
