Dallas Sidekicks News Release
Wichita, KS (Feb. 9, 2014) - One step closer to playoffs, the Sidekicks defeated the Wichita B-52s 5-4 in sudden death overtime on Sunday evening. Sidekicks midfielder Nestor Hernandez was undoubtedly the star of the match, the last of his four goals winning the match. Hernandez's hat trick was his fifth in a row, surpassing the Sidekicks franchise record held by David Doyle and Tatu.
Jamie Lovegrove scored the lone goal of the first quarter 6:30 in, despite the Sidekicks being outshot 9-4. Nestor Hernandez added to the lead on the powerplay with a long-range shot assisted by Nick Stavrou in the second period.
A few minutes later Wichita's Blake Ordell put Wichita on the board to close out first half scoring. Despite being outshot 13-9, the Sidekicks went into halftime with a 2-1 lead.
Wichita evened the score just 41 seconds into the third quarter, Maikel Chang scoring on the powerplay. Brady Bryant followed up a few minutes later to give the B-52s their first ever lead over the Sidekicks. Hernandez made sure that the lead was short-lived however, striking back at 7:45 to tie the game at three-a-side.
A Wichita powerplay allowed Travis Pittman to give the B-52s the go-ahead goal, but once again Hernandez put up the equalizer, scoring at 6:48. This was Hernandez's fifth consecutive hat trick, surpassing the Sidekicks franchise record held by David Doyle and Tatu. The remainder of the period remained scoreless, and for the first time this season the Sidekicks were forced into sudden death overtime.
Both goaltenders made spectacular saves in overtime, but it was Hernandez who scored the goal to win it for the Sidekicks at 10:27 - his fourth of the match.
With this afternoon's win, the Sidekicks have taken over the top spot in the PASL's Central Division. If both Dallas and the Hidalgo La Fiera win out their remaining games (Hidalgo takes on Saltillo and Tulsa this week), Hidalgo will finish out the season first in the division due to the Sidekicks' loss to the La Fiera in December. In this case, the Sidekicks will face the Monterrey Flash, who hold the number three spot, on February 22 at the Allen Event Center in the first step in their road to the Ron Newman Cup in Chicago. For their final regular season match, the Sidekicks head home to the Allen Event Center next Sunday, February 16 to take on the Harrisburg Heat at 3 p.m.
