State College Spikes News Release
LOWELL, Mass. - Jake Dahlberg saw his streak of 21 straight innings without allowing an earned run come to an end, but still tossed seven innings of one-run ball to help guide the State College Spikes to a 5-1 victory over the Lowell Spinners on Saturday night at LeLacheur Park.
The win extended the Spikes' (17-23) winning streak to three games, matching its longest of the year.
Dahlberg (1-2) delivered his fourth consecutive start of seven innings while allowing one run or less, but earned credit for his first win of the season. The left-hander retired the first 12 batters he faced and struck out five batters while giving up just four hits and a walk in the effort.
State College took a 2-0 lead against Lowell (21-20) starter Eduard Bazardo (4-3), who came into the game fifth in the New York-Penn League in ERA. Stanley Espinal's triple in the second was followed by Justin Toerner's double to bring in the first State College run, with Nick Dunn's RBI single in the fifth increasing the lead.
Bazardo, who had not walked a batter since June 20, gave a free pass to Toerner in the fourth to halt a string of 31 2/3 innings without a base on balls against him. The right-hander also allowed five hits and struck out five batters over five innings in the loss.
State College put away the game in the ninth thanks to the long ball. Wadye Ynfante led off the frame with a solo shot to left for his second homer of the year and Dunn followed with his first professional home run, a two-run blast down the right field line.
Winston Nicacio (1) recorded the last six outs of the game for his first save as a Spike, allowing one hit and striking out two batters.
Matt Duce produced a multi-hit game for the Spikes that included a double.
Lowell plated its only run in the sixth when Jarren Duran tripled and scored on Xavier LeGrant's sacrifice fly.
The Spikes look for their first series sweep of the year when they face the Spinners in the finale of a three-game set at LeLacheur Park on Sunday at 5:35 p.m. State College left-hander Diego Cordero (1-1) will get the start against Lowell left-hander Brian Brown (1-1).
Following the series in Lowell, the Spikes will head back to Happy Valley for a six-game homestand at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park that begins on Monday, July 30.
Highlights of the homestand include the second Super Splash Day of the year on Wednesday, August 1, doubleheader action against the Auburn Doubledays with $1 Beer Thursday on August 2, Bark in the Park III, presented by NEWSRADIO 1390 WRSC, on Friday, August 3, and Animal House Night with a State "College" Sweater Jersey-off-the-Back Auction presented by PSECU to benefit Children's Miracle Network on Saturday, August 4.
