Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - After a lengthy rain delay, the Tri-City ValleyCats couldn't pull out a win against the Staten Island Yankees, losing their seven-inning affair by a score of 2-0 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium.

The day started with a double-header that was intended to begin at 5 p.m., but after a severe thunderstorm passed through the Capital Region, the Yankees and ValleyCats were only able to complete one seven-inning game, which started at 9:50 p.m.

The game was finished as the conclusion of a suspended game between the ValleyCats and the Yankees that began on July 22nd in Staten Island.

Brett Conine, who started that day for the ValleyCats, remained on the mound to continue his fifth Minor League outing.

Despite pitching a career-high four and two thirds innings with a career-best eight strikeouts, Conine suffered the loss, giving up a fifth inning run.

After fanning the first two batters of the fifth, Conine hit Alex Junior, who stole second base and scored on a double from Brandon Lockridge.

The double was hit off of 'Cats' righty Devin Conn--the first hit that Conn has given up this season. Conn went his first eight career innings without allowing a hit.

After the tie-breaking run scored in the fifth, Conn then gave up the game's final run in the sixth inning, when Junior Soto stole second base, before coasting home on a Jesus Bastidas single.

Now with a record of 22-17, the ValleyCats hold a 2.5-game lead over the Lowell Spinners for first place in the Stedler Division standings.

The ValleyCats and Yankees will return to Joe Bruno Stadium on Sunday afternoon to play a doubleheader, which will begin at 4 p.m.

The second installment of the doubleheader will begin approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first one.
