Hickory Crawdads News Release

A tie game after six innings turned into a Columbus romp, 10-4, over Hickory at L.P. Frans Stadium on Thursday. The Crawdads played their part in a back-and-forth effort that saw the clubs knotted at 4-4 heading into the seventh, but the Catfish then clubbed four hits to bring across five runs and blow the game open before an insurance run in the next inning took the game to its final margin.

In the eighth, Hickory reliever Michael Felix allowed three singles, two walks and a sacrifice fly before leaving the game with the bases loaded. Jorge Charry entered in Felix' place and surrendered a two-out, bases-clearing double to Columbus' Mike McCormick that created too big of a chasm for Hickory to overcome.

Earlier, the Crawdads (5-10, 35-50) had battled back from two separate deficits, erasing a 3-0 Catfish lead and a 4-3 Columbus advantage with timely hitting.

Danny Bomback's two-run single capped a three-run third inning for Hickory that answered a three-run home run from Columbus' Henry Wrigley earlier in the inning.

Then in the sixth, Ronald Pena knocked in Erik Huber with an RBI single to square the game at four.

But the decisive eighth inning proved too much for Hickory, which lost for just the third time in 10 meetings with Columbus (10-4, 37-47) this season.

Felix took the loss, dropping to 3-3. Catfish starting pitcher Alex Cobb earned the win after allowing four runs (all earned) on seven hits in six innings of work.

Bomback finished with two hits, as did Huber, to lead the Crawdads. Huber scored twice, while Bomback and Pena each recorded two RBIs.

The teams meet for game three of the series Friday for a Fourth of July celebration at L.P. Frans Stadium.

Hickory will send RHP Bradley Clapp (1-6, 3.81 ERA) to the mound to take on Columbus LHP Brian Flores (7-3, 3.18 ERA), with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m.
