D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (August 31, 2007) - Major League Soccer announced today D.C. United's Troy Perkins has been named Player of the Month for August. D.C.'s goalkeeper was 5-0 during the month and allowed only a penalty kick goal by New York's Juan Pablo Angel. He collected four shutouts, made 16 saves and posted a miniscule 0.20 goals-against average (GAA).
It is the first time Perkins has been named Player of the Month during his four-year MLS career, though he has earned MLS Player of the week honors before (Week 13, 2006). This year, Perkins is tied for the League lead with 12 wins and has six shutouts and the third best goals-against-average in MLS (1.05)
Perkins impressive efforts have helped United ascend to the top of the Eastern Conference, as the team sits just three points behind the New England Revolution with two games in hand. After a 0-3 start, United is 12-3-3 in League play and is in good position for its remaining nine games of the regular season. The team will take on FC Dallas on Saturday (8:30 p.m. ET; Comcast SportsNet) in a game that has major implications for the race to obtain the Supporters' Shield.
