D.C. United Wins Two, Ties Two in Opening Weekend of Academy Action

Washington, D.C. (November 15, 2010) - D.C. United's Academy teams began the U.S. Soccer Development Academy season with both the U-18 and U-16 teams in action over the weekend. On Saturday, November 13 at Prince George's Community College in Upper Marlboro, Md., United's U-18's ran past New Jersey's Player Development Academy by a score of 4-2. Myles McGinley opened the scoring with a first half strike, as Iyassu Bekele added three goals of his own after the break. United U-16's drew 1-1 with PDA to round out Saturday's action, as Ohjay Porteria assisted on Dylan Regan's lone goal.

On Sunday, November 14 United faced its biggest rival in the New York Red Bulls. The U-16's recorded an emphatic 4-2 victory behind goals from Collin Martin and Dylan Reglan, along with a Dami Adilola brace. The U-18's drew 1-1 with New York, with Marcus Salandy-Defour scoring for the first time this season.

In early December, the Academy players head down to Phoenix, Ariz. to kickoff the 2010 Winter Showcase, one of the most prestigious domestic youth development competitions. On December 3, the U-18 and U-16 teams will face the Colorado Rush, followed by December 4 matches against Indiana United. The Black-and-Red will round out the tournament on December 6 against FC Milwaukee.

In mid-December, D.C. United's Academy faces some of the biggest names in world football at the 2010 Future Championships in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. A Black-and-Red U-17 side will compete against youth teams from FC Barcelona, Everton, Boca Juniors, Paris Saint-Germain, Club America, Cruzeiro, and others. This unique tournament will take place from December 12 through December 19.
