D.C. United News Release

CHANTILLY, VA (May 8, 2003) – D.C. United and Tottenham Hotspur today announced details for events surrounding next week's Capital Cup showdown in Washington, DC. Former Spurs legend and German international Jurgen Klinsmann has agreed to present the Capital Cup to the winner of the May 14th international friendly match between United and Spurs. The match is scheduled to kick-off at 7:30 p.m. at RFK Stadium. The trophy is being established as part of a plan to match clubs from capital cities world-wide in friendly competition. In the event of a tie after 90 minutes of regulation, the winner will be determined by means of penalty kicks. During pre-game festivities, United will honor former team captain and U.S. international John Harkes, who will participate in the match as a farewell having retired last month following an illustrious playing career.

"Wednesday night's game promises to be a world class soccer event," said United Sr. Vice President and General Manager Stephen Zack. "The events of next week allow soccer supporters from throughout the region opportunities to learn, enjoy and celebrate our great game.

In addition to Wednesday's activities, the two clubs will join to present coaching seminars early next week. The Tottenham Hotspur FC Coaches Clinics are free and open to the public with no pre-registration requirements. Former Spurs player David Kerslake will lead the coaching sessions along with several other members of Tottenham's coaching staff. The first of two sessions will be held on Monday, May 12th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the Maryland SoccerPlex located in Germantown, Maryland. A second session, held on Tuesday, May 13th from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., will occur at George Mason University's Intramural field 5, located on Rapidan Lane behind the GMU Field House.

D.C. United last faced the famed North-London team on October 17, 2002, in a fund-raising tribute match for past Tottenham players who have since fallen on hard times. That contest marked the first time any American professional team played a full international friendly in the home of a top-flight English side. The Black-and-Red triumphed with a 1-0 victory on a goal scored by guest player Wade Barrett in the 85th minute. Tottenham fielded a combination of future stars and Spurs legends, including Klinsmann, France's David Ginola, and England's Paul Gascoigne and Teddy Sheringham.

Founded in 1882, Tottenham Hotspur was promoted to the Premier League in 1977-78 and has remained there since. Home matches have been played at their storied ground, White Hart Lane, since 1899. Former England National Team coach Glenn Hoddle manages Tottenham. Hoddle earned legendary status as a player for Spurs from 1975-87. As a manager, Hoddle heads a side that will send their first team to the match, including a bevy of internationally known players the likes of striker Robbie Keane (Ireland), Uruguayan midfielder Gustavo Poyet and United States goalkeeper Kasey Keller. Other players currently scheduled to travel include: Neil Sullivan, Goran Bunjevcevic, Stephen Carr, Gary Doherty, Anthony Gardner, Ledley King, Chris Perry, Lee Barnard, Mauricio Taricco, Darren Anderton, Simon Davies, Jamie Redknapp, Kazuyuki Toda, Milenko Acimovic, Steffen Freund, Teddy Sheringham and Christian Ziege.

Tickets for the match range from $16-$36 and are available through TicketMaster PhoneCharge (202-4332-SEAT), at any TicketMaster outlet, through D.C. United (703-478-6600) or at HYPERLINK "http://www.dcunited.com" www.dcunited.com. Season ticket holders will be admitted to the game by presenting special event "A" from their season ticket plans at the gate on game day.
