D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, D.C. (February 25, 2005) - D.C. United announced today that the club has signed midfielder Clyde Simms, formerly of the Richmond Kickers and East Carolina University. The Jamestown, NC native made headlines earlier this year when he was the only non-Major League Soccer player called into full U.S. National Team camp in preparation for the team's World Cup qualifier versus Trinidad and Tobago.
"We are pleased to have reached a deal with both Clyde and the Richmond Kickers," said United Technical Director Dave Kasper. "We feel that Clyde has an tremendous upside and will be an asset to the team for years to come."
Simms, 22, spent the 2004 season with the United Soccer League's Richmond Kickers. He appeared in 31 games and had more starts (28) than any other rookie in the league. Simms notched three goals during the year, two of which were game-winners. He was twice named to the A-League Team of the Week during the season, the only rookie to receive such an honor.
At East Carolina University, Simms was a two-time All Conference USA selection (2002-03) and three-time captain (2002-2003). He ended his career at Eastern Carolina tied for fifth all-time in games played (72).
