D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON, DC (May 11, 2004) - On Wednesday, May 12th and Wednesday, May 19th, D.C. United will host approximately 25 students from Eastern High School, the closest DC public high school to RFK Stadium, as part of Junior Achievement's Job Shadow Day, the club announced today. Eastern High sophomores and juniors will be paired with a mentor from United's front office staff and will work side-by-side with their mentors, gaining a first-hand experience of working in professional sports.
"D.C. United has been trying to find the right program to bring to Eastern High School for a number of years now," said Catherine Marquette, United Director of Community & Fan Relations and Executive Director of United for D.C. "We are pleased to form a partnership with such a reputable organization as Junior Achievement that enables us to provide such unique job shadowing opportunities for the students at Eastern. We plan for this to be the first of many years to come for this relationship."
The Eastern students will first visit United's offices on May 12th, where they will be matched with a mentor based upon each student's area of interest. The students will begin with an orientation session, hearing from senior management, Human Resources and Community Relations. Following a stadium tour, the mentor and his/her shadow will then eat lunch together and participate in an interview process. Afterwards, the shadow will observe his/her mentor "in action". To wrap up the first day, each student will be assigned a project to help them gain real-world experience.
On Wednesday, May 19th, the students will return to RFK Stadium, as the Black-and-Red host the Los Angeles Galaxy. Mentors and shadows will be partnered again, and the students will participate in the game-day duties of their mentors. This second leg of the job shadowing experience will show the connection between the front office duties performed on May 12th to the day-of-game activities required on May 19th.
Founded in 1919, Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating young people about business, economics and free enterprise. JA programs are taught by volunteers in class and after school at locations throughout the United States and in nearly 100 countries. JA Job Shadow introduces students to careers through one-day, on-site orientations or through more extensive internships.
