Colorado Rapids News Release
The Colorado Rapids extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games tonight, tying the MLS record, with an exciting 0-0 draw with the New England Revolution in front of 7,784 fans at INVESCO Field at Mile High.
With New England down to 10 men late in the second half, the Rapids threw numbers forward and forced Revolution keeper Adin Brown to make a series of sensational saves, matching the play of Joe Cannon at the other end of the pitch.
Both teams were able to create a number of dangerous opportunities in the first half, however, each were only able to tally one shot on goal apiece. The Rapids sent a series of balls into the box, but they were unable to finish off any of the chances. Jean Philippe Peguero, Chris Henderson and Mark Chung all went close with shots, yet only Henderson forced Brown to make a save with a right-footed drive in the 10th minute.
The Revolution nearly got on the board in the 42nd minute when Jay Heaps played a short cross from the right wing to Taylor Twellman at the top of the six-yard box. Rapids keeper Joe Cannon got low to block Twellman's shot, and the ball ricocheted off the crossbar before being cleared from danger.
In the second half both teams continued to pressure the opposition goal, however both keepers were equal to the challenge.
In the 56th minute, Jose Cancela sent Twellman into the box alone, but Cannon dove at Twellman's feet and was able to save the New England striker's shot with his face. The rebound fell to Pat Noonan 10 yards from goal, but his shot was blocked by Pablo Mastroeni. Five minutes later, David Castellanos got free in the New England box, but his shot went just wide of the goal.
The Revs were reduced to 10 men when defender Shalrie Joseph was sent off for pulling Chris Henderson down on a breakaway. That opened things up for Colorado, and the Rapids registered 10 shots and five shots on goal in the final 15 minutes.
Rookie defender Gary Sullivan came on for Peguero in the 83rd minute and lined up as a forward for the first time in his career. He nearly won the match for the Rapids as he forced Brown to make a pair of diving saves. One minute after Sullivan's introduction, Mark Chung hit the woodwork with a header from the center of the box off a Matt Crawford cross. Chung's header beat Adin Brown, but crashed into the right post before being cleared.
In the first minute of stoppage time, Crawford had a shot from the right parried by Brown, but right to Sullivan who had the ball at his feet with an open net eight yards from goal. Sullivan sent a low shot goalwards, but it was cleared off the line by Steve Ralston to keep the game scoreless and earn each team a share of the points.
The Rapids return to action next Saturday night, at 8:00 p.m. (MT) when they travel to Los Angeles to take on the Galaxy. Colorado returns home on Saturday, May 22 when they host Freddy Adu and D.C. United at 7:00 p.m. (MT).
With a win or a draw against United, the Rapids will set a new MLS record for the longest home unbeaten streak. Tickets for this game, and all other Rapids home matches are on sale now. Call 303-825-GOAL or visit the Ticket page of this website for more information.
