D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON - D.C. United have acquired winger Lamar Neagle from Seattle Sounders FC in exchange for general allocation money and targeted allocation money. In a separate move, United traded Chris Pontius to the Philadelphia Union in exchange for general allocation money and targeted allocation money. Per league and club policy, terms of both deals were not disclosed.
Neagle, 28, played in 31 matches for Sounders FC in 2015 (23 starts), scoring four goals and adding two assists. In six MLS seasons, the Washington state native has 28 goals and 19 assists in 139 appearances (97 starts). He enjoyed a career year in 2014, recording personal bests in goals and assists (nine each), was second on Sounders FC among field players for most appearances, and scored two game-winning goals, at Montreal in March and at Chicago in June.
"Lamar is a talented player whose speed and versatility will allow us to create a more dynamic attack," said Dave Kasper, D.C. United General Manager and Vice President of Soccer Operations. "His workrate is top notch and we are very excited to welcome him to our club."
Pontius, 28, played in 23 matches for United in 2015 (17 starts), scoring three goals and notching one assist while dealing with a calf injury through most of the summer. He scored the game-tying goal against the New England Revolution in the Knockout Round match of the Audi 2015 MLS Playoffs.
"Chris has been a valuable part of our team and the United community over the years," Kasper said. "We thank him for his time and service and wish him the best."
Chris Pontius, who leaves D.C. United as the club's longest-serving player, was drafted seventh overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft out of the University of California, Santa Barbara. He scored 31 goals for the Black-and-Red over seven seasons (152 matches), including a career-high 12 in a 2012 campaign where he was named to the MLS All-Star Game, the MLS Best XI and as a finalist for MLS Comeback Player of the Year. The California native also recorded 17 assists during his time with United, including three in one game against Chivas USA on Sept. 10, 2011.
The following players are under contract for the 2016 season: Bill Hamid, Davy Arnaud, Bobby Boswell, Nick DeLeon, Markus Halsti, Collin Martin, Kofi Opare, Jalen Robinson, Alvaro SaborÃo and Chris Rolfe, Fabián EspÃndola, Steven Birnbaum, Sean Franklin, Taylor Kemp, Chris Korb, Conor Doyle, Luke Mishu, Travis Worra, Miguel Aguilar and Jared Jeffrey.
