D.C. United News Release
Washington, D.C. (July 29, 2014) - D.C. United has announced that the team has acquired defender Kofi Opare from the Los Angeles Galaxy, and in exchange the two teams will trade allocation rankings. Additionally, the club will also receive the Galaxy's 2015 second round draft pick.
"We are pleased to have acquired a smart, young defender in Kofi who has a very big upside, as well as securing a 2015 second round Superdraft pick," said D.C. United General Manager Dave Kasper. "This is an important move for us to make at this time to add depth to our squad as we enter the second half of the MLS season and the CONCACAF Champion's League group stage. We welcome Kofi to the D.C. United family."
A second round selection of the Galaxy in the 2013 MLS SuperDraft, Opare played four seasons at the University of Michigan, earning a place on the Big Ten All-Freshman Team in 2009 and Second Team All-Big Ten in 2011. In his rookie year with the Galaxy, he started and appeared in six games and recorded one goal.
This season Opare has appeared in six games, five starts, and has helped the defense to the lowest goal against average in the Western Conference at 0.94. Overall, he has appeared in 12 games and earned four shutouts.
On the international stage, Opare is eligible to play for the United States, Canadian and Ghanaian national teams. Opare previously appeared for the U.S. under-20 national team.
