D.C. United News Release
WASHINGTON - D.C. United have acquired U.S. Under-23 goalkeeper Charlie Horton from the New England Revolution in exchange for General Allocation Money in a sign-and-trade. The 21-year-old most recently played for Leeds United F.C. of the Football League Championship (English second division).
"Charlie is a talented young goalkeeper who has a bright future and we are very pleased to have him join us," Dave Kasper, United general manager and VP of soccer operations, said.
Born in London, Horton moved to Cleveland, Ohio at a young age, but chose to play professionally in England after high school. On the recommendation of former U.S. number one Brad Friedel, Horton signed with Peterborough United in 2013. A year later, he transferred to Welsh side Cardiff City of the Championship.
Horton was named to the USA's Olympic qualifying squad but did not see any action for Andi Herzog's side during the tournament. He started one match in the U-23s' two-game friendly series with Brazil last November, and also played in the prestigious Toulon Tournament in France last spring with United defender Jalen Robinson.
