LA Galaxy News Release
CARSON, Calif. - The LA Galaxy have signed forward Gyasi Zardes to a multi-year contract extension using Targeted Allocation Money ahead of the opening kick of the 2016 MLS season, the club announced today. Zardes, a product of Hawthorne, California, has scored 26 goals and added 10 assists in MLS play since joining the team in 2013. The Galaxy will kick off the 2016 MLS Regular Season at StubHub Center this Sunday, March 6, against D.C. United (7 p.m. PT, UniMás).
Zardes, 24, signs the extension after becoming a key contributor to the LA Galaxy since signing a Homegrown Player contract ahead of the 2013 season. The Galaxy Academy product finished the campaign with six goals and four assists last season, bringing his Galaxy total to 26 goals and 10 assists in three seasons with the club. In his three years with the club, Zardes' 26 goals rank in the top-10 of goals scored in LA Galaxy history. Zardes was also a key figure in the Galaxy's record fifth MLS Cup trophy, scoring against New England in the 2014 MLS Cup Final.
In addition to his club career, Zardes has become a regular with the U.S. Men's National Team, making 19 appearances for the USMNT in 2015 and tying Claudio Reyna's 1994 record for most caps by a U.S. player in their debut year with the National Team. He earned his first-ever call up to the USMNT during last year's January camp and made his first start at StubHub Center in a 2-0 win over Panama, where he provided the game-winning assist to Clint Dempsey. In all, the Galaxy Homegrown Player score three goals and added three assists for the U.S.
