D.C. United Academy Returns from Future Champions Tourney

Washington, D.C. (December 20, 2010) - D.C. United's Academy recently concluded play in the 2010 Future Champions Tournament in Belo Horizonte, Brazil following a series of mixed results in the prestigious competition. On December 13, the Black-and-Red displayed grit and tenacity to begin the tourney, registering a 2-2 draw against Mexican side Club America. United battled back from a 2-0 deficit to earn a share of the points, with Fuli Dainkeh and Patrick Foss scoring the goals for United.

United then progressed to group play in the U-17 tournament, playing against Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil's Vasco da Gama in Group D. On December 14 the Black-and-Red fell to PSG 4-1, with Ohjay Porteria scoring the only United goal of the match. One day later, the Black-and-Red had two players sent off in a controversial match with Vasco da Gama, as United lost 4-0 to the Brazilians. However, the club did not give up after these two difficult results, and on December 17 United defeated Uruguayan side CA Pe�arol 1-0 through a Yaw Amankwa strike with only five minutes remaining in the contest.

United concluded the tournament with a hard-fought 2-1 loss to Chile's Universidad, with Patrick Foss finding the scoresheet. The Black-and-Red are now heading back to Washington following their unique experience in Brazil playing alongside some of the top names in club football. United's Academy will resume U.S. Soccer Development Academy play in the New Year.

Also on the horizon for 2011 is D.C. United's Virginia Youth Soccer Association Convention, taking place on January 21 and January 22 at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington. On Friday, January 21, United Head Coach Ben Olsen will address the audience as a guest speaker, and United's loveable mascot Talon will also be on hand. On Saturday, January 22, United Assistant Coach Chad Ashton will deliver a coaching clinic, and a number of United players will be available for autographs. Participants will be able to attend the VYSA Luncheon for a chance to win numerous D.C. United prizes. There will also be a silent auction for a variety of D.C. United paraphernalia.
