D-Braves Take Series Opener over Burlington

DANVILLE, VA- Starter Ryan Lawlor pitched four solid innings, only allowing three runs on three hits and struck out a career high six Royals batters as the Braves held on for the 6-5 series opening win against Burlington. Reliever Sean McLaughlin picked up his third save of the year in two innings pitched, striking out two and only allowing one hit in the ninth inning.

The D-Braves scored five runs in the top of the second inning to take the early lead. Braves first baseman Carlos Castro lead off the inning with a hard ground ball to Royals second baseman Austin Bailey, who made a fielding error and Castro was aboard to start the five run rally. Braves shortstop Kurt Hoekstra would then walk to put runners on first and second with no outs. After a Jeff Campbell fly out to right field, third baseman Dylan Manwaring would single to center field loading the bases for catcher Trey Keegan. Keegan would then single to left field scoring two runs to put the D-Braves up 2-0. After a passed ball advanced Manwaring to third and Keegan to second base, outfielder Kelvin Estevez doubled down the right field line plating another two runs for the Braves to make the score 4-0. Leudys Baez would then ground out to second base advancing Estevez to third with Jose Morel next up to bat for the Braves. Morel would ground out to first base but the ball was misplayed on a tough play, it was ruled a hit and Estevez would score to make it 5-0 D-Braves.

Burlington would answer back in the top of the third inning scoring three runs to narrow the gap to 5-3. Royals third baseman Angelo Castellano would walk to lead off the third inning. Left fielder Colton Frabasilio would then single to center field setting up designated hitter Riley King. King would send an RBI double to center field scoring two runs, one of which was un-earned. King would advance to third base on a throwing error and the score was 5-2. Center fielder Luke Willis would then ground out to Luke Dykstra which would score King to make the score 5-3, with the Braves still leading after three innings.

The Royals would add a pair in the top of the sixth inning to tie the game at 5-5. Royals first baseman, and current Appy League homerun king, Brandon Dulin hit a lead-off double to right field. Royals right fielder Alex Newman grounded out to first base advancing Dulin to third and then Royals catcher Xavier Fernandez would send a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Dulin to make the score 5-4 Braves. The Royals would add another run later in the inning when shortstop Jose Martinez singled and later advanced to second on a wild pitch, third baseman Castellano would then single to right field scoring Martinez and tied the game at 5-5 after six innings.

On to the bottom of the seventh inning when the D-Braves would take back the lead. Dykstra would send a two out single up the middle for a base hit, and later advanced to second on a wild pitch. Castro would then also single up the middle and score Dykstra in the process to give the Braves the 6-5 lead and eventual win.

On the mound for the D-Braves tomorrow will be right hander Matt Withrow and right hander Ashe Russell will get the start for the Royals. Game time is set for 7 PM, gates open at 6. Tomorrow is also Tall Boy Tuesday, select 16-ounce beers will be at a discounted price through the seventh inning.
