D-Braves Take Final Game Over Elizabethton

July 14, 2014 - Appalachian League (ApL)
Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves came into Monday night's contest looking to steal the final game of a three game set after losing the first two to the Elizabethton Twins. Both starting pitchers Andry Ubiera for Danville and Steven Gonsalves worked very quickly, and efficiently. However, it would be Ubiera who would take charge for the D-Braves in the early going to help secure their 14th win on the season by the score of 4-2.

The final contest of the series was expected to be the best pitching matchup of the series, and it was just that. Andry Ubiera made his sixth start on the evening, and threw 5.0 very solid innings. Ubiera was ahead in the count all night for Danville, not giving the E-Twins much to work with. On the night Ubiera allowed one run on four hits and three walks, but managed to escape tight situations with runners on, including a bases loaded situation in the fourth inning, which could have been bigger than the two runs Elizabethton got. Only one run was charged to Ubiera from that fourth, as Yeudi Grullon could not come up with a backhand grab on a rope hit to second with the bases full.

The D-Braves have only scored less than four runs in a game twice all season long. Today, the D-Braves matched that mark thanks to three runs coming in the sixth inning. After that, the Braves never looked back. Carlos Sanchez, who was recently added to the roster when the team was in Pulaski, knocked a two run double down the third base line in the sixth inning that put the D-Braves in front 4-2. Sanchez finished the evening 2-3, with two doubles, two RBI, and a strikeout.

Monday night marked Joseph Daris' first game as a D-Brave after being called up from the Gulf Coast League Monday morning, and it started off impressively. Daris singled in his first plate appearance, then proceeded to steal two bases in the same at bat before Omar Obregon barely knocked a slow roller to short that allowed Daris to reach home. The speedster showed real early what he can do along the base paths for Danville.

Tuesday is an off day for the Appalachian League, with action resuming Wednesday. The Danville Braves (14-10) will be hosting the Bristol Pirates (7-15, Mon. game incomplete) in their first meeting of the season. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
