Greeneville Astros News Release
Greeneville, TN - The Greeneville Astros (11-12) were defeated by the Pulaski Mariners (13-11) for the second straight night on Sunday at Pioneer Park. After spotting the Mariners six runs in the second inning, the Astros fought their way back into the game but the early deficit was ultimately too much to overcome.
Both teams combined for 30 hits on the night. Greeneville had 13 compared to 17 for Pulaski. Interestingly, eight of the Mariners hits, five singles and three doubles, came in their six-run second inning.
The Mariners were led by shortstop Gianfranco Wawoe, who went three-for-four with two doubles, three runs and two RBI. He was one of four different Mariners to collect three hits on the night along with Arby Fields, Rafael Fernandez and Daniel Torres.
After the Mariners had built their lead to 7-0 with a RBI single by Fernandez in the third, the Astros began to climb back into the game as they scored six runs between the fifth and eighth innings.
The charge was led by second baseman Juan Santana, who went three-for-four at the plate, and new shortstop Jeffry Santos, who was making his Astros debut after being acquired in a trade from the Chicago White Sox organization. The two players had a hand in all six of the Astros' runs.
Santana had a RBI single in the fifth, scored on a Jacob Nottingham single in the seventh, and hit a sacrifice fly to score Bryan Muniz in the eighth. Meanwhile, Santos scored on a Sean McMullen ground out in the fifth, got a RBI on a ground-rule double in the sixth, and scored on a Pulaski throwing error in the eighth. However, despite their best efforts, the Mariners' bats were just too much on this night.
Over the final two innings, Pulaski added four more runs to put the game out of reach and secure an 11-6 road victory.
Troy Scott was winning pitcher for the Mariners. He went five innings and had two unearned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
The Astros will face the Mariners in the final game of the current homestand on Monday night. Game time is scheduled for 7:00pm.
