D-Braves Sweep Doubleheader Against Burlington

Danville Otterbots News Release

DANVILLE, VA - The Danville Braves played two on a beautiful Wednesday night, and swept the Burlington Royals. Game one of Wednesday's doubleheader did not disappoint the Danville faithful. In a 7-6 slugfest that featured 25 combined hits, the D-Braves came out on top of the Burlington Royals, their highway 29 rivals in game one. Danville took care of business in game two as well, winning 8-3 in a more one-sided contest.

Danville got the offense going in the bottom of the eighth, scoring five of their seven runs. The D-Braves lineup ripped through two Burlington pitchers, and it all began with a Tanner Murphy walk. A wild pitch would send pinch runner Trevor Sprowl to second, moving him to scoring position. Codey McElroy would rip his seventh double of the year and record his 13th RBI of the season, making it a 5-3 ball game late.

Danville's run would not stop there, Ozzy Albies would continue to wreak havoc on opposing pitching as he would move McElroy to third on a single, his second of the night. Burlington's second wild pitch of the inning, this one from Estarlyn Cordero Burlington's second pitcher of the inning, would allow McElroy to make it a 5-4 game. A third wild pitch in the inning would score Albies to tie the ball game at five. Later in the inning with the same score and one on, Burlington decided to walk Jordan Edgerton intentionally, bringing up Matt Tellor with two on and two out. Tellor would hit a shot to center, good for a two-run double and a 7-5 D-Braves lead.

Ozzy Albies made the D-Braves catch of the year as of now in the ninth inning that may very well have saved the game for the D-Braves. With two on and no out, Burlington third baseman Manny Olloque lined a shot to Albies at shortstop, who made a diving catch going parallel to the ground to save at least one run from scoring. Jose Martinez would single in Brandon Dulin to no avail however, as Burlington would fall 7-6 in game one.

Braxton Davidson stole the show for Danville in his first game with the D-Braves. Atlanta's first round pick flew into Greensboro Wednesday afternoon and made his debut in the second game of the doubleheader. Davidson contributed to a blowout D-Braves victory with two doubles and two RBI, after hitting .245 with seven doubles, a triple, and eight RBI in 36 previous games with the Gulf Coast League Braves. Davidson was selected with Atlanta's first selection in the 2014 draft, the 32nd overall selection.

Game two got busted wide open by Danville in the third inning, when the D-Braves exploded for five runs in the inning for the second time in the day. Trevor Sprowl led off the inning with a single, and would then be moved over to third by Ozzy Albies who also singled. Joe Daris and Omar Obregon would then drive in back to back runs to make it 2-1 with one out in the third. Back to back doubles by Codey McElroy and Davidson would score three more, and give Danville a 5-1 lead. Davidson would add another RBI to his total on a walk in the fifth inning, an inning that added three more Danville runs to their total.

Michael Flores, normally a reliever in 2014, made his first start of the season in game two of the doubleheader. Flores made the most of his two innings in the seven inning contest by striking out all six outs he recorded. In the two innings he did not allow a run while giving up two hits and a walk.

Danville's offense appears to be back on track after a tough road stand where they had only 19 runs in six games, as the offense went 13-31 with runners in scoring position in the two games combined to propel the team to the doubleheader sweep.

The Danville Braves (30-22) will hit the road tomorrow in a day trip, again with league rival Burlington (22-30). The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Burlington Athletic Stadium.
