Atlantic City Surf News Release
Quebec City - A quartet of Quebec Capitales' pitchers outdueled starter Brian Rodaway and the visiting Atlantic City Surf, as the home team picked up a 1-0 opening-night victory in a Can-Am League game on Friday evening at Stade de Quebec.
The only run of the game came on a fifth-inning sacrifice fly by Capitales' CF Goefrey Tomlinson, driving in SS Jose Contreras, who had previously reached on a leadoff single.
Quebec starter and former major-leaguer Eric Cyr (1-0) was masterful, limiting Atlantic City to two hits and fanning nine of the 16 batters he faced in five innings of work, earning the victory. T.J. Stanton, Mark James and Jason Schutt were equally effective in relief, holding the Surf to two singles and combining for another six strikeouts. The fifteen strikeouts by Capitales' pitching mark a new league record for a nine-inning game.
Rodaway (0-1) was the hard-luck losing pitcher for Atlantic City (0-1), giving up just two hits in five innings of work. Walker Whitley and Ryan Rafferty held Quebec (1-0) at bay the rest of the way, not allowing a runner past first base.
No player had more than one hit in the game. Surf 3B Billy Hogan had the only extra-base hit of the evening, a second-inning double.
The Surf and Capitales return to action Saturday night with a doubleheader starting at 5:35 p.m. in Quebec City, making up the rained-out game from Thursday evening. Atlantic City's J.C. Huguet faces Quebec's Michel Simard in the first game, while Adam Cox goes against Kevin Beavers in the nightcap.
