Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
TOLEDO, Ohio - The Cincinnati Cyclones used a pair of third period goals less than a minute apart to break a 1-1 tie and propel themselves to a 3-1 win over the Toledo Storm Friday night. Rookies Scott Reynolds and Greg Stewart played backhanded shots from in front of the Toledo net to guide Cincinnati to the win.
"That was a solid effort from our team tonight," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "Everybody did what was asked of them and the way we took the lead in the third period and held on was great."
The Cyclones opened the scoring 14:15 into the first period, when rookie defenseman Jon Gleed unloaded a slap shot from the right point. Off of a faceoff inside the Toledo end, Mathieu Aubin and Jason Deitsch fed the puck for the assists. The shots on goal favored Cincinnati, 18-7, in the frame.
An apparent Toledo goal earlier in the first period was disallowed, after referee David Jones ruled the deflected puck was tipped in with a high stick.
The Storm collected the only goal of the second period, as Andrew Martin picked up his first of the postseason, off assists from Chris Blight and Gerry Burke. The score came on a five-on-three power play. Toledo had four power play chances in the second period. The shots on goal favored the Storm in the middle frame, 13-10.
Cincinnati got its two goals less than a minute apart, as Scott Reynolds collected his first pro playoff goal at 12:39, which proved to be the game winner. At 13:35, Greg Stewart netted his first pro playoff goal at 13:35, with Deitsch adding the assist.
Cedrick Desjardins stopped 32 shots in picking up his first pro playoff victory. It was the first playoff victory for the Cyclones in four seasons and the first in Head Coach Chuck Weber's career in the postseason.
The Cyclones lead the series, one game to none. The second game of the best-of-five series will be played Saturday night (April 14) at the Toledo Sports Arena at 7:35pm. Game three of the series will shift to U.S. Bank Arena on Thursday (April 19) at 7:30pm.
