Victoria Salmon Kings News Release
Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver Canucks, were thwarted 5-2 in game four of the playoff series versus the Alaska Aces, despite two comeback attempts in front of 3,895 fans at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.
Alaska got on the board at 7:08 into the first period as Joe Talbot earned his third goal of the series. Matt Shasby took a slapshot from the high slot and Talbot deflected it past Goaltender Bryan Bridges from four feet in front of the crease.
Almost four minutes later, the Aces nabbed a 2-0 lead, capitalizing on an odd man rush. Defenseman Zack Fitzgerald attempted to make a cross slot pass but it redirected off a trailing Salmon Kings stick and slipped five-hole on Bridges.
Victoria struck in the second period on the powerplay to close the gap. Francois-Pierre Guenette kept the puck in the Aces zone and moved it behind the net for Wes Goldie. Goldie shifted left then cut back for the wraparound attempt. The rebound spun to Jordan Krestanovich pressing through the slot and he earned his first goal of the series beating Netminder Derek Gustafson.
Kimbi Daniels snagged his second goal of the series as Alaska jumped ahead 3-1 with 9:16 left in the second. Mike Scott carried across the blueline and dished to Daniels at the left circle and he drifted across the crease for the backhand tally. Victoria crept back within one with 5:15 remaining in the second stanza. Milan Gajic poked the puck out of the Salmon Kings zone, and Kiel McLeod raced up the right wing past the Aces defenseman to wire the puck farside top corner.
After a Victoria goal was disallowed, the Aces posted a 4-2 advantage with 3:38 left in the third frame. Scott took a shot from the right circle and Olivier Filion crashed the net for the rebound and pushed in his first goal of the series. Victoria pulled the goaltender in the final minute, and a final effort charge was turned away and Alaska threw in the empty net goal in an odd man rush.
