Cyclones Spin Black Bears

West Virginia Black Bears News Release


GRANVILLE, WV - The West Virginia Black Bears were defeated 9-4 by the Brooklyn Cyclones Wednesday evening. The loss ended the Black Bears' three game win streak.

Although the Cyclones rank last in the New-York Penn League in home runs, they showed signs of power by hitting three homers against the Black Bears this evening. Quinn Brody smashed a two-run homer in the top of the first and Jose Maria blasted a two-run bomb of his own in the top of the second to give the Cyclones an early 4-0 lead.

Top Pirates prospect Austin Meadows made a rehab start in West Virginia and put the Black Bears on the scoreboard with an RBI single in the bottom of the third inning. The Cyclones extended their lead to 5-1 in the top of the fourth but Lucas Tancas helped the Black Bears cut into their lead 5-3 by driving in two with a double in the bottom half of the inning.

West Virginia trailed 7-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out and the bases loaded, Cyclones' pitcher Jake Simon walked in a run to make the score 7-4. The Black Bears failed to take advantage of the bases loaded situation and did not bring home any more runs.

Franklin Correa doubled to right field and drove in two runs to give Brooklyn a 9-4 lead in the top of the eighth inning. Black Bears pitcher Ike Schlabach dropped to (4-4) in the loss. The Black Bears (29-20) will take on the Cyclones (15-33) again tomorrow night for their final meeting of the season at 7:05 PM.
