Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Terry Bennett had a two-run triple, Marcos Rivera a two-run homer and starter Alejandro Mateo tossed six scoreless innings to lead the Batavia Muckdogs to a 5-0 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
With two out and no one on in the third, a Mathew Brooks double and Thomas Jones hit by pitch preceded Bennett's line drive two-run triple to rightcenter off Vermont starter Argenis Blanco for a 2-0 Muckdogs lead. Those were the only runs allowed by Blanco (3-5), who gave up five hits with two walks and five strikeouts over six innings for the loss.
Mateo allowed a pair of two-out singles in the first and a leadoff single in the third over the first four innings before the Lake Monsters loaded the bases in the fifth on a walk, hit batter and infield single. But Mateo (2-1) escaped the inning with a pair of pop ups and a groundout, finishing his six innings with four hits, one walk and four strikeouts.
Rivera gave the Muckdogs a pair of insurance runs in the seventh when he followed a leadoff walk with a two-run homer to leftcenter off Vermont reliever Branden Kelliher. It was the third home run of the season for Rivera and a league-high 32nd allowed by Lake Monster pitchers.
Muckdog relievers Travis Neubeck (one inning) and Brent Wheatley (two innings) combined to toss three hitless innings with two walks and four strikeouts to complete the shutout, the third time this season that the Lake Monsters have been shutout and the first time at Centennial.
Vermont's first-place lead in the Stedler Division over Tri-City dropped to 1 1/2 games after the Lake Monsters loss and ValleyCats win at Lowell. Bennett went 2-for-5 with the two-run triple for Batavia, while Thomas Jones 1-for-3 with two runs scored.
Vermont (26-23) and Batavia (17-30) will wrap up the three-game series at Centennial Field on Thursday night starting at 7:05 pm.
