Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
CINCINNATI, Ohio - The 2008 Kelly Cup champion Cincinnati Cyclones, announced today that they have re-signed forward Billy Irish-Baker and defenseman Sean Perkins for the 2008-09 season. The Cyclones are the ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Montreal Canadiens and Nashville Predators.
Irish-Baker, 25, played in 55 games for the Cyclones last season, netting eight goals and six assists for 14 points. He also wound up with a +11 plus/minus rating. Billy collected his first two-goal game as a professional on November 7 in a 4-0 win versus Wheeling. He also played in eight Kelly Cup playoff games for Cincinnati, netting a goal in the Game Two victory against Johnstown in the opening round.
The five-foot-ten, 188 pound native of Clarence, New York, spent his collegiate career at Canisius College. As a four-year letterwinner for the Golden Griffins, Irish-Baker appeared in 134 games and collected 32 goals and 29 assists for 61 points. Billy set the Canisius record for consecutive games played with 115.
Perkins, 21, appeared in 44 games, collecting four goals and seven assists for eleven points. He also finished the regular season with a +18 plus/minus rating. Sean recorded his first multiple point game as a pro with a goal and an assist in a 7-0 win at Trenton on February 15. He also participated in four Kelly Cup playoff games, notching three assists in the postseason. In the 3-1 win in Game Four at South Carolina, he had a pair of assists-including one on the game winner.
The five-foot-nine, 190 pound native of Commerce, Michigan, spent two seasons playing junior hockey before turning professional. In his last stop at Vernon (BCHL) in 2006-07, Perkins tallied seven goals and 27 assists for 34 points in just 38 games. Despite missing more than one-third of the season, Sean was still among the top 20 defensemen in scoring in the league.
"We look for both players to improve on solid rookie campaigns," Cyclones Head Coach Chuck Weber said. "Sean was a pleasant surprise for us making our team as a tryout player. He developed into a solid all around defenseman, who was relied upon in different situations."
Tickets for the 2008-09 Cincinnati Cyclones season are now on sale. The Cyclones Sales Department can be reached at 513-421-PUCK, extension 144. The Cyclones open the season at Wheeling on Friday, October 17 and after three road games, host their home opener at U.S. Bank Arena against Dayton on Saturday, October 25 at 7:30pm. There will be a special Kelly Cup championship banner raising ceremony prior to that game.
