Cyclones Prevail over Aces in Preseason Opener, 4-2
October 9, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Cincinnati Cyclones News Release
ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Four different Cyclones earned multi-point games as the Cincinnati Cyclones (1-0 preseason) defeated the Alaska Aces (0-1 preseason) by a 4-2 final score in front of 3,848 at Sullivan Arena on Tuesday night.
Cyclones defenseman David MacDonald broke a scoreless tie at 13:11 of the opening period as he blasted a shot past Aces goalie Laurent Brossoit (L, 22 saves) on a power play to make it 1-0 Cincinnati; Brett Wysopal and Trevor Lewis were both credited with the assists. And thanks to a stellar pair of penalty kills by the Cyclones and eight saves from Scott Darling (W, 27 saves), the visiting team carried the one goal edge into the first intermission.
Cincinnati extended its advantage midway through the middle frame as Vinny Saponari caught a pass from Mike Embach in the high slot and sniped home his first goal of the preseason at 13:32. MacDonald also contributed with an assist. Then, at 16:28, Embach finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe passing display by slamming home his first goal of the preseason - giving the Cyclones a 3-0 cushion after 40 minutes of play.
The Aces made it a game of things in the final stanza, as Jordan Kremyr and Peter Sivak scored goals just 1:22 apart to pull within a single tally. However, thanks to a strong finish from Darling and a late empty net goal by Mathieu Aubin, the Cyclones held on to defeat Alaska by a 4-2 final score. It was the first time since the 2010 preseason that four different Cyclones registered multi-point games in an exhibition game.
The same two teams will conclude their preseason slate in another match-up tomorrow night at Sullivan Arena - with the opening face-off dropping at 11:15pm ET. Fans can follow the action on Nick Brunker's live blog on CyclonesHockey.com.
