Countdown to Face-Off: K-Wings vs Walleye Preseason

October 9, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release

Tonight will be the first preseason test for both the Kalamazoo Wings and the Toledo Walleye. Last season, the K-Wings were 8-4-1-0 versus their division rivals. Later this week, the teams will square off again at the Huntington Center in Toledo, Ohio to close out the preseason.

Kalamazoo finished last season in third place in the North Division and missed out of the Kelly Cup playoffs by only four points. Even without heading to the postseason, the K-Wings finished the season above .500 with a record of 34-30-4-4.

Finishing in second place in the North Division a season ago, the Walleye were the seventh seed in the Eastern Conference Playoffs. In the postseason, Toledo would fall in a six-game series (4 games to 2) to their in-state rivals, the Cincinnati Cyclones.

A Perfect 10

The K-Wings enter training camp with a familiar feel. Kalamazoo has 10 players on their training camp roster that have played for the K-Wings in the past, including nine who wore the red, white and blue last season.

Maiani Released

Yesterday afternoon the K-Wings released forward Anthony Maiani from their training camp roster. With a week and a half until their season opener, Kalamazoo still has 24 players on their training camp roster.

New Affiliation

This season, the K-Wings will be partnered with two NHL teams, the Vancouver Canucks and St. Louis Blues. Kalamazoo also announced in the off-season a new AHL affiliation with the Utica Comets, while remaining with the Chicago Wolves.

Brotherly Love

While we have seen brother coaching brother (Nick and Darryl Bootland) in recent years, it has been awhile since players have been teammates in Kalamazoo. Forwards Ray and Kory Kaunisto are the first set of brothers to dress for the K-Wings since defensemen Adam and John Elzinga played together during the 2005-06 season.
