New Haven County Cutters News Release

WEST HAVEN, CT- The New Haven County Cutters saw their playoffs hope fade away in the ninth inning Thursday night at Historic Yale Field as the Cutters late game rally fell short, losing to the Brockton Rox 6-4.

Trailing 6-3, the Cutters got the two lead off men on in 1B Chris Gaskin and SS Chas Terni. RF Kevin Whiteside reached on a fielder's choice moving Gaskin to third. With runners on the corners and one out C Matt Hackney grounded out scoring Gaskin, but Whiteside was left stranded with the tying run at the plate.

Mike McTamney (5-10) picked up his fifth win of the season, no-hitting the Cutters through four innings. It wasn't till a lead off single in the fifth by Gaskin that the Cutters offense got going. With two outs and Gaskin on first, Hackney was hit by a pitch putting runners on first and second. A wild pitch advanced them into scoring position and it was 2B Matt Mercurio that delivered the two-out, two RBI single tying the game at 2-2.

But only moments later, in the top of the sixth the Cutters imploded as the Rox got four runs across the plate highlighted by a bases clearing double by Francisco Lebron. Lebron's hit came off of Matt Salvato who had just entered the game in place of Cutters starter and loser Bucky Kosyk (4-2).

The loss to the Rox Thursday night ended any slim chance the Cutters had of making the playoffs. The Cutters will finish up the four-game set against the Rox tomorrow night as Ryan Bonesio (7-5) takes the mound for the Cutters. Chris Martin (1-2) will pitch for the Rox. Game time is set for 7:05 P.M.
