New Haven County Cutters News Release

Utica, NY- After dropping a tightly played 2-1 decision to the Aces in game one, the New Haven County Cutters came from behind twice against the Aces in game two to win 7-5 and earn a split of their double header on Monday night in Utica.

Game one was a classic pitcher's duel between New Haven starter Wes Mindingall and Aces left hander Angel Miranda where runs and hits were at a premium.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Aces mounted their first threat of the game against Mindingall. With two out and runners on first and second Coby Smith hit a single to left that was fielded by Aaron Fera who gunned down Jutt Hileman at the plate to end the inning and keep the game scoreless.

The Aces would finally break through against Mindingall in the bottom of the sixth. With two out, Al Corbeil's single was followed by a Yohanny Valera double that scored Corbeil for the game's first run. Gavin Fingleson's relay throw to the plate got by catcher Adam Shorsher allowing Valera to score and give the Aces a 2-0 lead.

New Haven rallied in the bottom of the seventh to make it close as three singles by Darren Ciraco, P.J. Johnston and Gavin Fingleson loaded up the bases with one out. Jimmy Hurst then lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Ciraco and cut the Aces lead to 2-1, but Miranda got Hector Lebron to fly out to left field to end the ball game.

Cutters starter Wes Mindingall(1-2) had his longest performance of the season, tossing six innings allowing one earned run, but took the loss. Aces left hander Angel Miranda (1-1) went the distance to pick up his first win of the year, allowing one run on five hits.

Game two was a back and forth ballgame that featured five lead changes and clutch hits from both teams. With the Aces leading 2-1 in the third, Al Corbeil hit a solo home run off Cutters starter Skip Wiley making it a 3-1 ballgame.

New Haven mounted their first comeback in the top of the fifth as catcher Adam Shorsher delivered a two run double tying the game at three. Aaron Fera then continued his hot hitting since joining New Haven, driving home Shorsher with a RBI single, giving the Cutters a 4-3 lead.

The Aces scored twice in the bottom of the inning to knockout Wiley and retake the lead at 5-4. Wiley went 4 and 2/3 innings allowing five runs, four earned while striking out a season high seven.

It didn¡¯t take long for New Haven to respond. Leading off the sixth, recently acquired Darren Ciraco, making only his second start for the Cutters, blasted a solo home run to tie the game at five. Later in the inning with runners on the corners and one out, Jimmy Hurst lined a RBI single to score Jose Mateo and give New Haven a 6-5 lead. The Cutters then tacked on another run on a RBI single by Hector Lebron extending the lead to 7-5.

Tim Keinath(3-2) came out of the bullpen to pitch 1 and 2/3 scoreless innings to earn his third win of the season and closer Shane Waroff tossed a perfect ninth to register his ninth save of the year. Aces reliever Jeff Busenitz(0-1) takes the loss.

With the Cutters' win in game two, New Haven's magic number to clinch the division stands at two. The New Jersey Jackals and Elmira Pioneers were rained out on Monday meaning the two teams will play doubleheaders on Tuesday and Wednesday. If the Cutters and Jackals end up in a tie at the completion of Wednesday's games, the two teams will compete in a one game playoff on Thursday in New Haven to determine the South Division champion.

After every Friday night home game this summer, a fireworks show will light up the New Haven sky. "Win Jonathan Fleisig's Money" is during every Saturday Game at Yale Field where fans can actually win money from the owner of the Cutters for watching and enjoying a night at the ballpark. Every Sunday is a WEBE 108 Family FUNday with plenty of entertainment to keep all ages entertained. Tickets for these games and others are available by calling the Cutters front office, 203-777-5636, or through the team's website, cuttersbaseball.com.
