Can-Am Canadian American League

New Jersey's Rowan and North Shore's Bicondoa named players of the week

July 12, 2004 - Canadian American League (Can-Am) News Release

Durham, N.C. -- New Jersey's Chris Rowan and North Shore's Ryan Bicondoa were selected by SportsTicker as the Northeast League's Batter and Pitcher of the Week, respectively, on July 12. Rowan is the third Jackal to win the award, while Bicondoa's selection marks the third straight week the Spirit have had a player selected Pitcher of the Week, as John Kelly was honored on June 28 and July 5.

Rowan, who is in his second year with New Jersey, had 10 hits in 25 at bats for a .480 average, and due in part to two doubles, a triple and four home runs posted a slugging percentage of 1.120 in six games. He also drove in nine and scored 10 times, while reaching base 53.6 percent of the time. Rowan was originally selected by the Brewers in the 14th round of the 1997 draft and played in the organization's minor leagues until 2002.

Bicondoa, who is in his first season with North Shore, was key in helping the Spirit win the first half as he recorded five of his league-leading 13 saves last week. In 4 2/3 innings of work, he allowed one hit, walked one and struck out five. Bicondoa was originally signed by the New York Yankees in 2002 and then was traded to the New York Mets for Armando Benitez in July of 2003.
