WEST HAVEN, CT - New Jersey Jackals' starter RHP Mike Vicaro (1-2) came within one strikeout of tying the Can-Am League record with 13 in 8.0 innings, Tuesday night, to defeat the New Haven County Cutters, 8-2, in the first of a three-game series at Historic Yale Field.

After giving up two runs on two hits in the first inning, Vicaro pitched seven shutout innings and retired the final 18 batters he faced.

The Jackals took a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning with three walks, two singles, a sac fly and a hit batsman.

The Cutters answered with a two-run first inning as centerfielder Ervin Alcantara led off with a walk and came around to score when third baseman Matt Mercurio's bunt single was misplayed.

Left fielder Henri Stanley followed with a single that moved Mercurio to third base and setup a sacrifice fly for designated hitter Orlando Encarnacion.

Stanley added a single in the ninth inning to end up 2-for-4.

Jackals' leftfielder Jud Thigpen was 1-for-2 with a two-run double and designated hitter Sandy Madera was 3-for-5 with a double.

RHP Tom Rispoli (1-2) suffered control problems in an emergency start for the Cutters, walking a league-record nine batters, and gave up seven earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings in the loss.

Game two of the three-game series is set for Wednesday at 7:05 pm.
