New Haven County Cutters News Release

West Haven, CT- The New Haven County Cutters made the most of nine hits in a 8-7 dramatic win on 'Dog Day' at Yale Field.

Jose Mateo and Hector Lebron would team up early and often in this game. The switch-hitting shortstop scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly by Hector Lebron in the first inning. The two would team up to deliver the knockout blow in the ninth inning of a tied ballgame, 7-7. Jose Mateo led off with a drag bunt down the first base line that was fielded by Shane Hopper and the play at first was close. Second baseman Juan Melo, who was covering first on the play, and Mateo collided at the bag with both players falling to the ground upon impact. Mateo was safe and both remained in the game. Johnston attempted to lay down a sacrifice bunt that was fielded by reliever Mike Hoyt. Hoyt's throw to first got away from Hopper and allowed both base runner's to advance into scoring position. Hector Lebron would follow with his second hit and fourth RBI of the game to win it for New Haven on a sharply hit ball back up the middle scoring Mateo.

This was a wild game for the starters that saw a season high six walks issued by Tony Harden and a season high three hit batters by Quebec starter Lance Franks. A total of five batters were hit by pitches.

After the Capitales tied the score at 1, in the bottom of the third the Cutters would score five times. The major blow was an RBI double down the first base line by Hector Lebron that got into the corner with the bases loaded that scored two. PJ Johnston Jimmy Hurst and Kevin Forbes accounted for the other three runs.

Jimmy Hurst extended his on-base streak to 21 games and finished 1-for-3 with an RBI and was hit by a pitch.

Shane Waroff pitched in his fourth straight game and went 1 2/3 innings for the win giving up one hit and striking out two for the win.
