Rockford IceHogs News Release

Rockford, Ill.- Rookie goaltender Brendan Cuthbert earned a start on Sunday afternoon for the Rockford IceHogs after a solid showing on Saturday night. The first year puck stopper impressed, picking up a shutout in his first start in an IceHogs uniform, turning away all 42 Muskegon Fury shots, leading the Hogs to an 8-0 win in front of 3,460 at the Rockford MetroCentre. Center Preston Mizzi netted a club record four goals and the Hogs set a club mark with its 47th win of the season.

Rockford took control of the contest in the first, jumping out to a 4-0 lead. Mizzi netted his first of the game at 8:40 on the power play. Later, at 14:41, rookie center Steve Yetman fired in his 18th tally of the season, beating Muskegon goalie Nick Boucher for the 2-0 advantage. Just 16 seconds later, winger Jason Notermann snuck in his first of two lamp lighters on the afternoon, chasing Boucher from the game.

Mizzi finished off the four-goal first period with his second of the contest at 19:25. In the second period, the Hogs extended the lead to 5-0 when winger Bruce Watson deflected in a Ryan Carrigan shot past goaltender Clayton Pool at 2:33. Mizzi completed his hat trick at 12:30, knocking his own rebound in to put the Hogs up 5-0.

In the final frame, Mizzi notched his club record fourth goal of the game and 36th of the season on the power play, flipping another rebound past Pool at 10:55. Notermann finished the scoring and the Fury at 14:05 with his second goal of the affair and 29th on the season.

Muskegon outshot Rockford 42-20 in the contest, but Cuthbert, picked up off of waivers from the Missouri River Otters earlier in the week, was sharp saving all of them. The IceHogs were also impressive on the penalty kill, holding the Fury to 0-for-7. In two games at the MetroCentre this season, the Fury are 0-for-15 on the power play.

Rockford completed the contest 2-for-6 on the advantage and had five multi-point scorers. To go along with Mizzi and Notermann, Greg Barber (2a), Yetman (1g-2a) and Watson (1g-2a) registered multi-point games. Rockford set a club record for most home wins in a season (27) and Cuthbert tied a club record for a rookie goaltender for most saves in a win and set a club rookie record for most saves in a shutout.

Next Home Game: Friday, April 14 vs. Flint Generals. The Hogs begin the final weekend of the 2005-06 regular season against the Generals at the MetroCentre. The first 1,000 fans to the game will receive IceHogs Poster #6 in a series of 7 from Medicine Man, Johnson Press, Jim Orlando Photography, Pepsi and Rockford Register Star.
