Bloomington Thunder News Release
BLOOMINGTON, Illinois - Slide another player into the committed list for the Bloomington Thunder. Sunday evening the Thunder were pleased to see that forward Patrick Curry (Boston University) announced his commitment to Boston University. Curry is the 20th player on the Thunder roster connected with a Division-I program and is the ninth with the Thunder to commit this season. The new Terrier's prospect put his announcement on the web through Twitter saying,
"Proud to announce my commitment to play D1 college hockey at Boston University. Thanks to everyone that helped me along the way. #Terriers" - @pcurry19.
Coming to the rink with a smile on his face Monday, Curry referenced his excitement multiple times during his interview. "It all happened fast, I didn't have time to react to it so I'm still in a bit of shock. Obviously going to Boston University; one of the top five colleges in college hockey, has me pretty excited. I couldn't be happier with the decision, I'm just so excited."
Curry, 20, is in his third season in the United States Hockey League and second full season with the Thunder. Having a career year with the Thunder, the Schaumburg, IL native has 33 points (17g, 16a) and ranks fifth on the team in points. He has been a key component to the USHL's top scoring power play, scoring ten of his goals on the man advantage. Curry is the longest tenured Thunder player, suiting up in 113 games with the organization. This season, Curry has three game winners for the Thunder and seven multi-point performances. That includes his first career hat-trick, the third in Thunder history, on March 10 against the Youngstown Phantoms.
Beginning in 2013-14 with the Tri-City Storm, Curry made his debut on December 13, 2013 against Youngstown and scored his first career goal three games later. In the offseason, the Thunder acquired the forward along with Alec Mehr and a draft pick in exchange for an expansion tender. Curry has scored 53 points for the Thunder in his career and been vital to the team's success during the 2015-16 playoff year.
"Growing up and watching college hockey I always knew Boston University was one of the top teams; consistently making the tournament, winning national championships, and playing in the highly toughed Hockey East Conference," said Curry on his future program's history, which was one of his deciding factors in the commitment.
The 5-foot-11 winger will be joining a Boston University program that appeared in the NCAA West Regional this season, while playing in arguably the toughest conference of Division-I. Notable alumni from Boston University include NHL greats like Tony Amonte, Chris Drury, Keith Tkachuk, and most recently Jack Eichel as the second overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft. The Terriers have won the National Championship five separate times and most recently made it to the Frozen Four one year ago.
Before joining the Thunder, Curry began his junior career with the Springfield Junior Blues of the North American League, netting 26 points (12g, 14a) in 25 games. His junior career in Central Illinois followed his youth career in Chicago with the Young Americans program of the HPHL.
"I give all the credit to our coaching staff here and my teammates. (The coaching staff) is always pushing us during the week to be better," said Curry. "I just want to say thank you to them for everything they have done to get me here. It has helped me a lot."
Curry and the Thunder finish the regular season this weekend with games Friday and Saturday night. Bloomington has already locked up their Clark Cup playoff spot in the Eastern Conference and await their opponent announcement following the completion of the regular season. They are currently tied for third in the East with the Dubuque Fighting Saints.
