Iowa Cubs News Release
Jeff Samardzija threw eight shutout innings as the Iowa Cubs (37-33) beat the Memphis Redbirds (32-37) 4-0 in front of 11,509 fans at Principal Park Saturday. Jason Dubois and Bobby Scales homered to lead the Cubs attack. Blake Parker threw a scoreless ninth to nail down the eight-hit shutout.
Samardzija (4-3) tossed a career-high eight innings and allowed just six hits and four walks while striking out six. He threw 64 of his 102 pitches for strikes.
Dubois finished the night 1-for-2 with a home run, two RBIs and a pair of walks. His solo blast leading off the second inning gave the Cubs an early lead. His sharp ground ball off the glove of Memphis third baseman Brett Wallace made it a 2-0 game in the third.
After Sam Fuld singled to lead off the fifth inning, Bobby Scales hit a blast toward the left field suite level. At first, it appeared that Scales' shot had caromed off the top of the wall. After a brief conference, the umpire crew ruled that the ball had gone over the wall before bouncing back into play, and Scales was awarded his fourth home run of the season.
Fuld, who scored on the Scales homer, continued his torrid pace at the plate. The Cubs' center fielder finished 2-for-4 Saturday and helped preserve Samardzija's gem with solid play in center field. In the month of June, Fuld is hitting .391 (29-for-64) and has raised his season average from .240 to .277.
The Cubs will try to clinch their season series with Memphis when the teams wrap up their four-game series tomorrow afternoon. Kevin Hart (3-3, 3.10) is scheduled to pitch for Iowa in search of a win in his fourth consecutive start. Right-hander Adam Ottavino (0-8, 5.16) will go for Memphis. First pitch is scheduled for 1:05 p.m.
