Iowa Cubs News Release

Micah Hoffpauir was a triple shy of the cycle as the Iowa Cubs defeated the Round Rock Express 11-7 at Principal Park Thursday night.

First baseman Mark Saccomanno reached first with two outs in the first inning on an error by Iowa center fielder Felix Pie. Saccomanno later scored on an RBI double by Ray Sadler to take an early 1-0 Express lead.

Hoffpauir helped Iowa answer back in the bottom half of the first with a two-out single to center field and scored two batters later on Casey McGehee's RBI single.

The Express took a 2-1 lead in the second on Tommy Manzella's RBI double and made it a 4-1 game when Nick Gorneault and Lou Santangelo hit back-to-back homers in the third off I-Cubs starter Randy Wells.

However, the lead was short-lived. Wells led off the bottom of the third with a single and scored on a double by Micah Hoffpauir to make it a 4-3 game. Iowa would tie it at four on an RBI groundout by Jason Dubois.

Hoffpauir and the I-Cubs added another run in the fifth when Pie tripled to right field to score Wells. One batter later, Hoffpauir connected on his 10th home run of the season with a shot to right off Round Rock starter Kyle Middleton to take a 7-4 Cubs lead.

Round Rock rallied to make it a 9-7 game in the seventh with a two-run homer by Yordany Ramirez but it wasn't enough, although Round Rock out hit the Cubs 18-13.

A night after hitting three home runs in one game, Dubois added his team-leading 17th of the season with a solo shot off Express reliever and former I-Cub Micah Bowie. Luis Figueroa added an RBI single to make it a 10-7 game. Iowa added their 11th run of the night when Bobby Scales scored on a wild pitch by Bowie.

Hoffpauir finished the night 3-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored and just a triple away from the cycle. Wells (7-3) earned the win going 5.1 innings, giving up four earned runs on 12 hits and striking out five. He was 1-1 and added a pair of runs at the plate. Middleton (1-2) took the loss, roughed up for seven runs on as many hits in five innings of work.
