Daytona Tortugas News Release
DAYTONA BEACH, FL - The Daytona Cubs (24-28) dropped the series opener to the Charlotte Stone Crabs (27-23) by the final score 4-1. Dae-Eun Rhee (2-6) worked four-plus innings of baseball and Ryan Flaherty extended the team's high 14th game hit streak.
Charlotte brought home three in the top of the second to take an early lead over Daytona. Catcher Jake Jeffries and left fielder Henry Wrigley led off the frame with back-to-back hits off of starter Dae-Eun Rhee. First baseman Leslie Allison brought them home along with himself on a three-run home run to right field. It was Allison's third blast of the season.
The Stone Crabs tacked on a run in the top of the sixth inning against reliever Oswaldo Martinez. Leslie Anderson reached on a one-out single and advanced to second as right fielder Reid Fronk reached via a walk. Martinez then walked center fielder Isaias Velasquez to load the bases for shortstop Tim Beckham. The 2008 first overall selection hit a sharp ground ball to third that was stopped by a diving Ryan Flaherty. The Cubs third basemen's only play was to race Fronk to the bag and the Stone Crabs' outfielder won the race and allowed Anderson to score.
The lone Daytona run came in the bottom of the sixth inning with a two-out double to Ryan Flaherty to extend his season-high 14th game hit streak. Rebel Ridling then blasted an RBI double to the left-center field wall to drive in Flaherty. Kyler Burke kept the inning alive with an infield single, but Jake Opitz lined out to left field to end the inning with two runners left on base.
The Daytona Cubs will continue the four-game series with the Charlotte Stone Crabs Wednesday with first pitch at 7:05. Get your ice-cream fix for just one dollar all night long with another Radiology Associates Wednesday at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
