South Bend Cubs News Release
The Cedar Rapids Kernels streak of homering in 11 straight games ended last night, but they quickly started a new streak as Jair Camargo homered on the first pitch of the second innings to give them a 1-0 over the South Bend Cubs.
South Bend got that run right back. Delvin Zinn walked for the second straight plate appearance to start the top of the third and after getting picked off and caught stealing second in the first inning, he stole second successfully this time. The Cubs leadoff hitter got to third base on a Bradlee Beesley groundout and then touched home to tie the game on a Tyler Durna RBI double.
The Cubs pulled ahead for the first time the next inning. Jake Slaughter (3-4, R, SB) led things off with a single, Matt Burch walked and Edmond Americaan tapped one down the third base line for an infield single to load the bases with one down. Zinn brought home Slaughter on a sac-fly to centerfield to give South Bend a 2-1 lead.
Ryan Jensen faced just one batter above the minimum through five innings and struck out Chris Williams to start the sixth. But then Cedar Rapids came to life.
The next six batters reached base and five of them came around to score, including another homer from Camargo, this time a two-run shot and his second multi-homer game of the season. Jensen was replaced by Eduarniel Nunez with the Cubs trailing 6-2.
Nunez allowed a home run to Spencer Steer in the seventh, his team-leading 10th homer of the season, a solo-shot to make it 7-2. The Kernels would add three more runs in the eighth inning as Burl Carraway walked four batters and allowed one base hit.
Next up: RHP Bradford Deppermann (0-1, 3.86 ERA) takes the hill for the Cubs vs. RHP Tyler Beck (1-0, 2.57 ERA).
